Do you want to learn chemistry? Are you having trouble with chemistry? Do you have an Internet connection?
If these things sound familiar, you’re probably either here because you’ve heard I can help you with chemistry. Which I can. Through the miracle of the Internet.
So come have a look! You don’t have to give me money, you don’t need to sign up for anything, and you don’t even have to have an Internet connection. Well, maybe you need the last thing, but aside from that, this site is yours to enjoy and learn from.
Peace and best wishes,
Ian Guch

Where did the chili recipe go? I’ve loved it for years, but never bothered to print it out.
Step 1: Prep the Seeds. Spread open a paper towel, place all chilli seeds evenly on it.
Step 2: Soil and Germination. Chilli plants usually require an airy soil which is well drained.
Step 3: Flowering.
Regularly water and nourish the plant and the chillies will grow bigger and bigger.
I totally forgot! I’ve put a new and improved set of instructions at http://wp.me/p4ZH0M-7k (though the recipe is the same).
Thanks! (The weather is getting colder and a bowl of Mr. Guch’s Chili sounds awfully good.) I have used worksheets from your website for years and sent my students there for additional practice as well. Thanks for all of it!
I have always enjoyed all of your resources. Love the upgrade and can’t wait to see what else is coming! Thanks for all the help.
WOW!!! Very impressed with the changes!!
HI
Hi.
Thanks for your awesome resources! It’s wonderful to have quality sites for us and our students.
Amazing
I have been a Mister Guch fan since ’98! I have been teaching jr high science for over ten years and chemfiesta has been in my lesson plans since the day I found it. From my first oil spill lab to buying your “For Dummies” tome, it’s been a grand ride! Thank you so much.
Dear Mr. Guch
I am a student taking chemistry at a not so local high school and in my frantic scrambling to pass tomorrows test, I have stumbled across this gem of a website. Seeing your chili recipe and your nitric acid story has truly made my day and inspired me. Please keep up the great work for your students with my thanks in mind. With luck I’ll pass another test tomorrow. Just kidding. My teacher is ruthless. Ily
i`m speechless
thank you sir!
Hail and praises to Mr. Guch! Thanks for such a great website for chemistry and chem resources.
Thanks so much for spreading the love with these resources. I’ve just discovered your website and think it’s great. Your advice to kids, parents and teachers is spot on. Thanks too for the heads up about the Fugazi demo (in your blog). Who said Chemistry teachers are nerds?
Thanks Lisa! I’m glad you like the site and my advice. And most of all, I’m glad to hear from anybody who knows Fugazi!
Are you mr spann?
No. I’m Ian Guch.
Just found this site has been updated…great resource for teachers, very much appreciated 🙂
Thank you so much for these resources. You make me more efficient and effective 🙂
I have been struggling with trying to figure out the rationale behind how to correctly use the roman numerals when naming a compound all semester. Tonight I found this website on a practice exam we were given in class and in literally 5 minutes I had mastered the process. The way you present the “how to” step by step process helped me tremendously. I can’t thank you enough! Just call me ‘grateful college girl’
Thank you for your generosity in sharing your resources to the world. Aloha.
vinaka and thank you once again for your greatest help …..now i came to understand this clearly…
I am trying to cobble together a chemistry class for my homeschool son. Starting Grade 10. I love your site, can you recommend a good text book or other primary source to be used along with it? Thanks in advance.
Thanks for the nice comment about the site. I’ll email you with some thoughts.
Ditto here, Mr. Guch. If that email turns into something that looks like a blog post, I’d sure like to read it some day. BTW, it’s awesome to see what you’re doing here!
I realize it’s been a several years since this comment was posted but I too would love a recommendation of which text book you would recommend. I’m so happy to have found this site. We’ve tried one curriculum so far but it’s quite dull and I”m losing him fast. I’m hoping to turn things around for 2nd semester! Thank you!
Wow! What an amazing site. I, too, would love to know your recommendations for a homeschooling curriculum in chemistry. You obviously know your science, but even better you appear to ENJOY it. Any suggestions you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
wonderful that you have chosen to teach chemistry to all those who are interested
An awesome approach.I like it
The link to your Partial Pressures worksheet isn’t working. It keeps sending me to the Gas and Stoichiometry worksheet. Need help please!!!!
Hi. I just saw this post and have fixed the problem you mentioned. You can now enjoy the wonderful world of Dalton’s Law of Partial Pressures over here: https://chemfiesta.wordpress.com/2015/03/26/gases-and-their-laws/
If you find anything else, let me know!
Hello, I have used ‘Six Steps to Wonderful Graphs’ in the past in my class room with great success. I can no longer access it, but was redirected to this site. Do you still have this as an active link? If so, I would greatly appreciate it if you could help me locate it. Thanks very much.
The graphing stuff is on the new and improved chemfiesta.com at https://chemfiesta.wordpress.com/2014/09/17/drawing-good-graphs/ . Let me know if this is what you’re looking for, and if not, I’ll see what I can do!
Hey Mister Guch —
If you’re interested in adding an alternative vegetarian chili recipe, I can recommend one that’s first-rate based on a sampling of two: your Mom and Dad.
BTW, the web site keeps getting better and better — particularly since (young) Steve has been getting involved.
Old Steve
thanks Mister Guch I have been using your online worksheets whenever I have chemistry. Now I am a minor in chem in college and I am still using them. Thank you
Thank you very much, your worksheets are awesome!

I need the help desk! Came here for stoichiometry calculations help.
Thank you for providing all of these valuable resources and for being one of my top “go to” spots for Chemistry! I’ve been “with” you since my first year of teaching 15 years ago. You’ll stick around for at least another 15 until I retire, right?
I’m not going anywhere! In fact, I’ve just decided to write a series of books (for free on the website, of course) that cover each aspect of first-year science. Don’t tell anybody, though!
Thank you so much for all you do on this website! You saved my butt so many times during my first year teaching a high school chemistry! Now I am in my third year and it will be in Sweden. You have given a good base to work from and making it interesting and fun!
So I miss not teaching high school chem alrady (new school this year), but still listen to the Descendents and wonder if they actually used to show up and raid your apricot stash? Enjoy!
I wish. Any time Milo and crew want to come by, they’re always welcome.
Just sent in a donation. You’ve helped me explain things so many times! Spent too much time here not to support. Thanks for all you do.
Thanks Johanna! I appreciate your kindness and generosity! You’re awesome!
You’re not serious about your gas stoichiometric question on water are you?
Step 7: Switching gears to gases
Now that we’ve done some moles-grams stuff, you’ll notice that our next step is to convert from moles of water vapor to liters of water vapor. This is done using our friend PV = nRT, or in the case of gases at STP, 22.4 L/mol.
In this example we’re at STP, so we’ll just continue the calculation above using “22.4 L” as our conversion factor:
Water is NOT a gas at STP, and your quantity of water has a volume of approx. 20mL. at STP., except maybe on Venus or Mercury..
Hi. I’m glad you pointed this out to me because it’s a perfect example of how two important things:
1) I can screw up like anybody else.
2) The best way to fix problems is to get the input of others.
I will, by the end of the afternoon, make sure that the problem you mentioned is fixed. I would also like to encourage you (and anybody else reading this) to please let me know when there are mistakes on the site. It’s only through comments like yours that I know there’s a problem.
I just wanted to say thanks. Big thanks. My co-teacher and I had to build an 8th grade (high school credit) chemistry and physics class from scratch. We leaned heavily on your materials for our students, and you deserve the virtual high five. Thanks!
As a first-year Chem teacher, I seriously can’t thank you enough for making this bounty of resources freely available. Your site is my go-to for student practice work on days that I’m unexpectedly sick and need to get something to my sub ASAP.
Nice post. thanks for sharing this post.

Hi Mr. Guch,
I never realized until now that I was able to actually leave you a comment! I just wanted to say thank you so very much for taking the time to build this beautiful repository of chemistry help! In highschool (7 years ago now…wow!) I took AP chemistry and it was thanks to you that I learned how to balance equations! Fast forward to now, I have graduated with a BSc. Honors in Chemistry from Concordia University in Montreal, and I am currently pursuing my MSc. in Chemistry! I truly feel that I owe a lot of my success to you, you are one of my chem-heroes!
I have also been TA-ing general chemistry for three years now, and I have referred well over two thousand students to your website. Does this mean I get an entire island of ponies? haha!
So thanks again Mr. Guch, I appreciate you SO very much. ❤
Thanks for your message! I’m glad that my resources have helped in your march toward chemistry awesomeness. Of course, you realize that if you win a Nobel Prize, I’m going to expect a shout-out!
oh cool
Thank you for all of your resources. I found a mistake on your answer key to Balancing Equations Worksheet, Part 2. Ques 12 is balanced and question 14 has coefficients of 2,3,3,1. Please email me if I am incorrect. berghmary@yahoo.com. Thanks again.
Thank so much for this! I used this website 8 years ago in high school and now am here again for my brother 🙂
wonderful explanations. thank you for sharing.
Anjali
Mr. Guch, I am a teacher and I have been using your website for years. Thank you for making it available. You are THE MAN!
Hi, Guch! How you been? Can you send me pics of your chili recipe and/or attach a picture of the chili itself? Would love to take a peek! Keep on truckin’! I’ll leave my email below:

Hey. The chili stuff can be found here: https://chemfiesta.org/2014/11/03/mr-guchs-chili-recipe/ . I don’t have any pictures, so you’ll have to imagine it for yourself.
Hi Dr. Guch!
You are the ABSOLUTE best and I have been using your website since my first gen chem course in 10th grade all the way to now when I TA gen chem as a PhD Student in Chemistry (i owe it to you!!!)
I keep trying to click the “miscellaneous worksheets” link under the “worksheets” tab and it routes me to a page with an orange box, but I click the orange box and the cycle just starts over…wheres da worksheets?!
Thank you so much,

Wow… I totally didn’t realize that this wasn’t working. I’m not sure what’s happened, but I’ve fixed things up considerably. The new worksheets page is up at (https://chemfiesta.org/2018/11/09/worksheets-2/) and it has all of the worksheets on the site listed. Weirdly enough, I found that in about the middle of 2018 the worksheets disappeared off of the page sidebar as well, so they’re up there, too. Thanks for letting me know about this, and for your kind comments!
In this single water molecule, there are two atoms of hydrogen. Given that the molar mass of hydrogen is 1.0 g/mol (check out the periodic table), the mass of both oxygen atoms together is 2.0 grams.
Typo; Should read hydrogen atoms together is 2.0.
My kids LOVE when they get “GUCH worksheets”! Thank you! Also – I just saw your scope/sequence – you only list one day a week – does that mean you only meet with your classes one day a week? Thanks! And thanks for all you share!
hi thanks this is pretty cool and helpful also the chili is yummy okay bye 🙂
Mr. Guch,
How do you pronounce your name? Is it g-OO-ch or g-uhh-ch?
Thanks always.
Love two sciences kids
