Sometimes it seems as if the world is falling apart. COVID-19 has forced us out of school and into hiding. The murder of George Floyd and subsequent brutality has left us confused and afraid because the society in which we live has let us down in important ways. There are a lot of things in the news lately that seem to suggest that we’re living in a dying society.
Please don’t get too frustrated. Things will get better. Though COVID-19 has killed over a hundred thousand people in the US, it’s also given us a chance to see how neighbors are willing to help each other in time of need, and it has shown us how doctors and nurses tirelessly work to help others. Though the murder of George Floyd is appalling, it seems to be leading to a long overdue discussion of race relations in America – one that might just make a lasting difference. We humans may spend a lot of time screwing the world up, but we also tend to learn from our mistakes and improve over the long term.
The world will one day be normal again. You’ll eventually get to go back to school and hang out with your friends. COVID-19 will eventually get a vaccine. And people who have been marginalized by the police and society because of the color of their skin will one day be able to walk the streets at night in safety. Despite everything we’ve gone through lately, I really believe that.
